Qualcomm’s new chip will help make Android Wear watches slimmer

Qualcomm has announced a clutch of new processors and chip systems, including a platform dedicated solely to wearables. Currently, the majority of Android Wear smartwatches are powered by the Snapdragon 400 system-on-chip, originally designed for smartphones and tablets. Qualcomm wants to replace this with the newly-announced Snapdragon Wear 2100. The Wear 2100 is 30 percent smaller than the 400 and uses 25 percent less power (allowing for slimmer smartwatches with longer battery life). It  ...

Yahoo layoffs have begun today, as Mayer tries to turn around her turnaround

Yahoo layoffs have begun today, according to numerous sources, with conference rooms across all its facilities reserved to tell employees that they have been fired. Sources said the cuts are deep and widespread, up to 15 percent of the staff of the Silicon Valley Internet giant that has not been able to gain ground under its latest CEO, Marissa Mayer. That’s more than 1,500 jobs, with cuts coming in media and sales. Yahoo’s search efforts have been largely spared the ax, since it is an area  ...

Most companies encourage you to recycle the packaging their products ship in, but Alcatel has figured out a way to let its smartphone box be reused as something even cooler: a virtual reality viewer. According to VentureBeat, which reports seeing leaked information about Alcatel’s upcoming OneTouch Idol 4S smartphone, the 4S will ship in a plastic box that doubles as a Google Cardboard-compatible VR viewer. All that really means is that there are two eyepieces on the inside, a slot to  ...

Google’s self-driving cars rack up 3 million simulated miles every day

Google uses its giant data centers to simulate 3 million miles of autonomous driving per day, the company has revealed in its monthly autonomous driving status report. That’s a really long way — like driving more than 500 round trips between NYC and LA — but it actually makes a lot of sense. Americans drove some 2.7 trillion miles in the year 2000 alone and Google needs all the data it can get to teach its cars how to drive safely. The real advantage comes when Google’s  ...

Airmail for iOS is here: the email app that can do everything

The most popular email apps usher in some sort of innovation: Sparrow had incredible simplicity, Mailbox had snoozes, and Inbox has its intelligent cards and bundles. Their popularity came from changing the way we work with email — so it’s easy to overlook today’s launch of Airmail for iOS, which has no one standout feature, as just another app. But even though Airmail doesn’t have any one standout innovation, it does something that few other mobile apps dare to do: let  ...

Google adds design oomph to virtual reality unit as Apple enters the fray

Now that Google has an official virtual reality division, it’s shuttling more Googlers into it. The company has moved around 10 employees to a dedicated design team for VR, including Joshua To, a design lead for the apps unit, according to sources. A Google rep confirmed To’s move, but didn’t comment further. Design is a critical element for Google’s success in VR. Most of the VR devices on the market, or coming soon, are considered lacking in their accessibility and aesthetic. And Google  ...
