With a design as head-turning as the 2015 Lincoln Continental concept, the Lincoln Motor Company surely knew it had a winner on its hands, but perhaps not this much of a winner.
The automaker revealed its all-new 2017 Lincoln Continental in January, a very subtle evolution of the original concept, and already the company says it has a list of 40,000 interested buyers.
The report comes from Automotive News, which met with Dan Marks, chairman of the Lincoln National Dealer Council, at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention. “People are asking a lot of questions about the car,” says Marks. “This is the most buzz I’ve seen in a long, long time.”
For 2017, the Continental nameplate brings back some of the brand cachet that Lincoln has lacked in recent years, as well as more performance—a twin-turbo Lincoln V6 offers up 400 horsepower. Couple that prestigious flagship sedan with a new Lincoln Navigator on the horizon and the brand looks set to amplify its overall sales in the coming years.
Last year, Lincoln sold 101,227 cars, a year-over-year increase of 7.1 percent. Through the first quarter of 2016, the luxury brand shifted 24,905 vehicles, an increase of 16 percent year-over-year, and one spearheaded by a redesigned 2016 MKX crossover.
Notably, the “hand raiser” list for the new Lincoln Continental is said to be twice as big as the comparable list for the MKX, before its late-2015 arrival.
Admittedly, the 40,000 interested customers chasing a new Lincoln Continental is a mere sliver of the 276,000 (and counting) that have reserved a new Tesla Model 3, which has been stealing headlines left and right over the past week.
Nevertheless, it’s still a very pivotal moment for the Lincoln brand, as well as vindication that Lincoln’s “quiet luxury” angle is indeed the right way forward… and working.
