Everyone likes a good road trip. Whether it’s to move cross country (check), to see the space shuttle launch (I did the drive, though the launch was scrubbed), or just to see somewhere new (check, check, check).
A road trip is an opportunity to see the world, one mile at a time. Most of my road trips have involved stops at quaint, but inexpensive, roadside motels across the United States and Waffle Houses and every local fast food joint known to man.
But you can also go the other way, if your checkbook is deep enough. It’s for those special few that Land Rover has partnered up with British luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent for what’s being billed as "the most luxurious road trip on Earth." It’s got a luxury price tag to match, too: $140,000.
So what do you get for the price of seven Volkswagen Golfs? 21 days of amazing adventure in a top-of-the-line Range Rover in stunning luxury.
That’s the same price as seven VW Golfs
It starts in Europe, with drives around Monaco and the coast road to Portofino, ending up at the Four Seasons Cap Ferrat in Côte d’Azur and then the Villa D’Este on Lake Como. Then there’s a personal fragrance making class and a picnic on a glacier in the Alps. You have to take a private helicopter to get there.
Then you fly to Marrakech, Morocco for off-road fun in the desert and mountains, including lunch at Kasbah Tamadot, Richard Branson’s luxury hotel. Then you fly to the Utah desert and continent number three, staying at the Amangiri resort, dinner under the stars, and breakfast in the stunningly beautiful Zion National Park.
But you aren’t done yet. Next is a flight to Chile, to the Atacama Desert and a stay at Awasi, an incredibly luxurious resort (are you seeing a trend yet?). Among the adventures lined up for Chile is a drive to the Alma Observatory, one of the world’s best astronomical telescopes.
Finally, you head to Sydney (where a behind-the-scenes tour of the Opera House and VIP bridge climb await) and Tasmania for a drive through "the vast, rugged wilderness." Don’t worry, another luxury resort awaits, the Safire Freycinet.
And that’s your 21-day epic adventure, driving Range Rovers on five continents. Interested? Reach out to Abercrombie & Kent.
And yes, before you point it out, for the same money you could just buy a Range Rover. But that wouldn’t be nearly as good a story, would it?
