The story of the Unimog is an interesting one. It was developed by the Germans after WWII as a vehicle that could go anywhere and do anything. It served as a utility vehicle, worked well for agricultural applications, and has since been used around the world by military and police forces. Now you can own one through an upcoming auction.
This is a 1983 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406.101, and it’s one of only 353 produced. It was designed for use by the German Luftwaffe at airports, and this one spent time at several air force bases before being sold to a buyer in the Netherlands in 1998. There it was refurbished and eventually resold in 2012 to a German who had it converted for civilian use.

According to Silodrome, the ballast weights on the stern were replaced by a flatbed and wider wings made it possible to add larger all-terrain tires. Other changes include new headlights, pipes, and valves, as well as all fluids. They even replaced the door and window seals for good measure.
It’s ready for a new owner and will be going up for auction on March 19. Estimated value of the Luftwaffe Unimog is between $49K – $71K making it the same price as many of today’s full-size SUVs. We know which one we’d rather have.
